“Everyday a homophobe dies. Everyday a gay activist is born.”
Sixty-nine percent of people under thirty support gay marriage. Only 39% of seniors support it.
Yayas don’t think about being gay in the same way older generations do. Look at Neil Patrick Harris. Harris has never denied being gay, but he officially came out with an exclusive with People magazine in 2006. Behind the camera, Harris portrays the character of Barney Stinson an outlandishly heterosexual man who boasts on the show his “playbook” for getting women and it’s effectiveness in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. YaYa viewers and bloggers will tell you they are in love with both the character and the real man.
When it comes to celebrity endorsers, stick by them. CEO, Ron Johnson, stuck by Ellen Degeneres, when put to the test of million moms protesting. The result was positive PR. Ellen’s response on her show was covered by several news outlets and has over 2.6 million views on YouTube. Supporting a gay celebrity can show YAYAs your company or client shares their values. There will always be backlash from loud conservative groups, but remember there is safety in numbers. If 69% of the future supports you, don’t push aside a phenomenal fresh spokesperson in favor of a safer vanilla spokesperson.
